2021 in Room 10

The 2021 School Year ends:
The school year finished - and a farewell lunch was held for 'the Covid Kids', our Year 8 Room 10's who've had 2 years of Covid-interrupted learning, our first 'Composite class' in the new look Tokoroa Intermediate.

Oh how they've changed since that first day way back in February 2020...

Room 10 2020 - 21, featuring Miss Hurliman our student teacher and Brooke our Teacher Aide - both former Room 10's too

Te Whare Pono Leaders 2021
We had a wonderful group of leaders for 2021 and a big thanks to them for the work they put into establishing Te Whare Pono at Tokoroa Intermediate, your leadership in learning the whare chants, pepeha and waiata was outstanding, as were your assemblies and leadership out at sport.

Te Whare Pono won the JIB Trophy for Interhouse Sport  2021 at our final prizegiving

At our Whare Prizegiving, our 2022 leaders were announced, these were chosen by both the whare teachers and our whare leaders:

Congratulations to our Room 10's selected - School Leader Hunter, and Whare leaders Cerrone and Tanea.

BRAINS!
We took part in a fun activity with our epals in  Ua Pou, called 'What's Going on in Your Brain' based on one featured in one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Books.

School Lunches: At the start of the 2021 school year, Tokoroa Schools started getting free lunches as part of a Government initiative to ensure children were getting not only a piece of fruit in the morning but a healthy balanced lunch too ( see a post below for more information)

The class investigated what healthy eating was and looked at the different food groups in each of the school lunches provided.

At the end of  the year, they completed a survey on Google Forms on these school lunches - here are some of the findings:

Athletic Sports 2021

Our school Athletic Sports were held and Room 10 Year 8's had a very successful day:

Julius 1st Shot Put and Long Jump

Tayden 2nd High Jump

Flynn 1st High Jump, 2nd 100m and 200m

Takurangi  1st Shot Put          Jazalia 1st Long Jump       Kiera 1st Discus

Maia 1st High Jump     Joan 2nd Shot Put

and Tanea our only Y7 place getter - 3rd in Shot Put

Sadly, Covid meant the WIMS Athletics didn't go ahead this year, so our winners above didn't get the opportunity to compete against other schools.

Food Technology - aka Cooking
In Food Tech' with Chef,  the class have learned to cook a range of interesting dishes, and some had the opportunity to join a weekly extension group where they learned to make different types of bread.

At the end of weekly cooking lessons, the group has to share some of their cooking with their teachers, who score the food on taste and presentation. Maia and Tanea made pancakes and french toast. Both scored highly!

Māori Migration - Myths and Legends

In Social Studies the class learned about Māori Migration to Aotearoa - New Zealand, a great resource we used was the website Maatauranga.

Maatauranga - Maori Migration

They also read the stories of the great explorer Kupe and found out about the places he stopped at in Aotearoa that still carry his name:

The class also learned about the adventures of Maui, the creation story, and closer to home; Hatupatu and the Bird Woman. To show what they had learned they retold in their own words one of the stories they read. Yilia from Shanghai, China retold the Chinese creation story:

EOTC

This year despite Covid lurking around we had three trips out of Tokoroa.

The first was to Te Awamutu, where we were privileged to be on of the last classes to visit The Space Centre. This has always been a highlight for Room 10's and we hope 'Space Dave' is able to have school visits again in the not-too-distant future. LOTS of learning about Space took place there.

We also visited the Te Awamutu Museum to find out more about early Maori life in Aotearoa, to reinforce our Voyagers learning and the significance of Matariki.

MiCamp- Whakamaru, we had a great day out here, lots of fun and sometimes challenging activities, it was a great way to reward the Whare for all their hard work during the year.

Air Rifle and Archery - aiming at the target, BMX (Yilia had never ridden a bike before!), Sling Paint - paint balls with a slingshot, Geocaching, Zip Lining and Wall Climbing were the favourites.

We had a student teacher in Room 10 at this time - Miss Hurliman ( a former Room 10 !) on return from MiCamp she taught the class to write haiku about their experiences there

Our final EOTC for 2021 was a trip over to Rotorua, first, we went to Te Puia, where the realities of Covid and its impact on Tourism were evident. In a place usually packed with tourists, there were only two other visitors there beside us. :(
On a positive note, it was great to be able to see a wonderful venue that the majority of the class had never been to even though it's only 45 minutes from Tokoroa.
After a great tour where the class saw Kiwis, mud pools, geysers, and the carving and weaving schools, it was off to the Rotorua Luge to meet up with the rest of Whare Pono and have some fun times riding the luges
