Room 10 Term 4 - from the Syndicate Newsletter

ROOM 10 TERM 4 2014
Room 10 started Term 4 with lots of tests, thankfully most students made progress. Earlier in the term Mrs Puke selected some students to be in the Ki o Rahi team for the Raukawa Nga Taonga Takaro intermediate interschool’s tournament .The students that were selected from room 10 were Cora Hulme, Joyzius Tunnapopo, Bailie Lyttle, Brooklyn Manu, Kani Manu, Jeremy Sneddon and JWA.
In early November it was that time of the year where everyone participates in the school athletics. We had long jump, high jump, sprints, shot put and discus. Kani being Room 10’s athletic star nearly became junior boy champion. The best of the best in athletics made it to Waikato Intermediate Athletics.
For the past few Monday and Tuesday’s we have had a syndicate sports competition in our Tech Arts groups, we played the Tech Arts groups from the other classes. Room 10B won and 10A got 2nd equal.      We also had syndicate relays and of course Room 10 won the Syndicate Relay Cup. Room 10 has won it every year except 2010 which room 12 won and if you ask me we are pretty darn goodJ. Sadly we haven’t won another interclass sport for a while.
Finally the event everybody had been waiting for….THE MARAE TRIP #shamazing. We started the Marae trip with a Powhiri which is the Maori way to welcome you on to the Marae, then we sang our little hearts out to Hareruia. After the powhiri we had the mean as kai; yum, yum, yummy thanks to all the great parents. We learnt about some of the carvings.  The next day we went up to TA and went to a museum we learnt how to weave using flax.  it was very interesting after that we went down to a park which you can see on our blog. Once we had finished our lunch at the shamazing park, we went back to the museum and learnt about the Waikato Wars. We then travelled back to the marae and played till it was time to have dinner then it was off the movie to watch Mockingjay.
To finish off the term we had a fun day with lots of relays, a movie and  a Christmas activity in first place were the ‘jerry cherry’s’ then the Nevada’s then the Mc sausages.
Last Tuesday we had our school social and Cora got best Yr7 dancer and Nevada got best dressed along with JWA .
Now we are all anxiously awaiting for prize giving - let’s hope Room Ten gets lots of award .

Seen and heard by your faithful correspondents Kiana and Cora

Room 10's Marae Stay 2014

Late in November every year Room 10 stay at Papa O Te Aroha Marae for 2 nights.

This year they were  welcomed on with a powhiri, learnt marae kawa, and got some expert tuition in stick games - Titi torea, from Whaea Awhina. They heard the stories of many of the many beautiful whakairo ( carvings) and saw other examples of culture and heritage - the tukuku panels and kowhaiwhai.

After very little sleep they headed off to Te Awamutu Museum to experience the Making Muka programme and learn about the Waikato Wars. Went to the latest Hunger Games movie, walked back to the marae in the dark and played spotlight. Another late night and some work done in the morning ( yes Brooklyn you paid $65 to write a diary!) then a swim in the Town Pools  and home.

A full on two days but a great chance for the class to spend time together in different learning environments. It was fun...

Hareruia

We are incredibly lucky at Tokoroa Intermediate to have the most incredible talented Kapa Haka tutor - Whaea Awhina. Room 10 needed a waiata to sing at our powhiri at the Marae next week, so today she came to class and taught Rooms 10 and 12  the waiata 'Hareruia'.
This is the result after 25 minutes singing - pretty amazing - and thanks to Kade and Nevada for volunteering to do the finale - you two are pretty talented too !

Scary Narratives 1

In Term 3 Room 10 read scary narratives, then wrote and illustrated their own scary narrative. Their last task was to read aloud with fluency and expression, an extract from the narrative they had written:

Athletic Sports 2014

Athletic Sports have been and gone - Everyone in Room 10 competed and some had more success than other - particularly Kani.
A magnificent effort  saw him placed 1st 60m, 100m, 300m, Shot Put, Cricket Ball Throw and 1st = Long Jump. 2nd 200m, and 5th in Discus. Unfortunately a misunderstanding meant Kani didn't jump in the High Jump - with his long legs I'm sure he would've done extra well there too.
Runner up Junior Boys Champion.  Room 10 are proud of you Kani!

Congratulations also to:
Nevada 2nd in High Jump and 4th in the Cricket Ball Throw.
Shakira 4th in the Shot Put
Te Amorangi 2nd 60m, 200m, Long Jump, 5th 100m, 1000m and 1500m,
Jozyius 5th 60m and 100m, 3rd 1000m,
Zak 5th 1000m, 2nd 1500m,
Karma Ray 4th in the 1500m and JWA (Jayviar) 5th in the middle distance events 200m and 300m.

Pomegranates and Persephone

Room 10 are learning about Greek Myths and Legends, and they now know that myths explain natural phenomena like seasons.
Last week they read the story of Persephone. Poor  Persephone is kidnapped by Hades and ends up in the Underworld, where she eats 3 pomegranate seeds. In this myth, this explains why we get the 3 months of Winter on Earth. Tina was the only class member who knew what a pomegranate was, so today everyone got to try eating one...

Survival Island

This week Room 10 started playing the 'Survival Island' Game - a scenario has been set and everyone has found that they have survived a 'plane crash' in the Pacific and have ended up on remote islands in randomly selected groups. Now they have to work together co-operatively to solve problems and report back to the class on how they did this. Points are given throughout the game and the group with the most points is the winner...

Scary Narratives

In Term 3 Room 10 read and wrote scary narratives. Their writing had to include some horror elements, have an orientation, complication and resolution, and include some literary devices such as similes and onomatopoeia. Final proof reading was the responsibility of the authors. Here are some of the best ones:

The Witch The Hunt
Everyone in Room 10 knows Zak doesn't really enjoy having to write, however with some help from our Teacher Aide Zak was able to get his ideas written down and published ...

. The Little's

Shontelle  put considerable effort into her illustrations:

Term 3 in Room 10 - from the Syndicate Newsletter

Room 10 students started the term learning about Sexuality Education. The girls got sent to Room 12 with Mrs Long and the boys went into room 9 with Mr Noke. From there we discussed the phases that you go through when you reach puberty.

BREAKING NEWS there have been sightings of our new principal she is a lady named ……. Mrs Mariassouce’ she used to teach at a school called Paerata School.

Speeches: A couple of weeks ago it was that time of the year that everybody hates,
SPEECHES. Everybody in the school had to deliver a speech on the topic that they chose then they had to deliver it to their class and the top 4 in every class went to the Syndicate finals, the four lucky winners from our class were Keawe #food Cora #Fears Kiana # old people, Nevada # pool /8 ball. 2 students from our class made it to the school finals they were Kiana and Keawe. Mrs Puke was very proud of all her class.

Cross country: “Go go go” cheered our friends as we were running the track for cross country. A lot of people made it in to the top 20 from our class they were Te Amorangi, Nevada, Akeisha Shontelle, Cora, Zak, Jayviar, Matthew, Bailie and Jack. Production: Only one of our students Kiana Mclean was brave enough to join the production, Kiana played the role of the mean troll but lucky for us she is not a mean troll she is actually a really nice person.

Sports: Every Monday and Tuesday our syndicate goes out for P.E and this term we have been doing athletic skills including high jump, long jump shot put cricket ball throw.

Scary narratives: Our big topic for this term is scary narratives we have been reading and writing scary stories. To give us some inspiration on writing our stories Mrs Puke has been reading us out loud DRACULA the whole class loves it.

Extension: about half of our class is in a Technology Extension group. Every Monday after lunch a bunch of kids from our class go to their extension groups here is some things that they have been doing. In cooking Kiana, Cora and Karma have been making animal biscuits with Mrs Duffin. In Art Kade, Sarah, Nevada, Bethany, Robert and Jack have been using water colours. In ICT Bailie and Akeisha have been learning how to make and create animations. In materials Mr Wild has taught Jeremy Ellie and Zak how to make a “do nothing machine”, it goes around and around and around.
