2021 - Another Covid year #1

2021 has been a funny year for Room 10, we were in Level 1 for Term 1-2 and life was pretty close to the old normal, school assemblies, kapa haka, sports and learning.

Here's some of what we got up to:

Pink Shirt Day 2021             Pink Shirt Day 2021               Pink Shirt Day 2021

Wearing pink to school was encouraged and Room 10 did it well:

Pink t shirts were designed:

The School Leaders write about  events happening around the school for the School Newsletters

Here's some of Casey and Maia's work:

Kia Orana everyone, The year is going so fast, we are already in Term 3

Kuki Airani Week ( Cook Island Week)

Week 2 was Cook Island language week,  our school Polynesian Group had two full days of practice preparing for a performance at Central school on Wednesday 4th of August.

Wednesday was also our School's Cook Island Mufti day. That is where we could dress in mufti but had to wear COOK ISLAND themed mufti. It was a great turn out and it was pretty cool looking around our School and seeing an explosion of colours. Here are some of our students all dressed up. We also had an island shirt design competition, and the winners won a lolly leis.

There was also a class Tivaevae competition that was won by Room 5, they got a shared class lunch as a prize. Staff contributed food towards this.

WIMS Rugby Sevens

Whaea Atapo and her husband Tamihana Coxhead coached the teams that went to the Rugby Sevens. Here is her report:

Tokoroa Intermediate took two teams to the WIMS 7 a side Rugby tournaments. The girls team competed and played against schools from the Waikato region. The team played each game with Mana and made themselves and the school proud. Tui Te Awa held the girls in a fierce haka to which the crowd enjoyed.  With their fantastic efforts on the field the girls brought home a well deserving 4th place.

Last week the boys team played in Matamata, in the open weight grade.  The boys played well as a team, and put skills learnt into play. After making the semi finals, the boys won a deserving 3rd place as Berkely defaulted.  Many tries were scored to which the boys stayed humble and showed Matamata the TIS way of winning.

The participant, behaviour and effort of these teams was outstanding. What a fantastic day of sports representing Tokoroa Intermediate School.

Maths Week

Week 3 was New Zealand Maths week,  and to celebrate this we did different maths challenges each day of the week. There was a box for each Whare and each day the classes put their answers in their box. If they had the correct answers they got a prize.

Prizes were also  given out for whoever won Mr Creigh-Smith’s daily maths challenge.

Tokoroa High School Open Day

Wednesday 10th August,  All the Year 8’s went over to Tokoroa High School for their open day.

Our group went to the Gym and did some Multi Sports and a new sport they invented, called Tricking.

They showed us around the school and then we ended up going to the Science room making ice cream and hokey pokey. Which was really nice by the way.

Then we headed off to the Technology Room where we did a pop quiz type thing which was pretty cool. Later we went back to the School hall and got pizza  and gift bags and then went back to school.

It was a pretty nice day out, and we learned something about what it’s like at Tokoroa High School.

NYLD - National Young Leaders Day

On Wednesday 16th of June, a group of 24 students went to the National Young Leaders Day. It was held in Claudelands Arena, Hamilton. There were five speakers. They all had different backgrounds and different stories to tell.

The speakers were Cam Calkoen, Brooke Neal, Riley Hathway, Shay Wright and Benny Tipene.

The speaker I enjoyed the most was Cam Calkoen because he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was born and it never seemed to stop Cam from achieving what he wanted to do in his life. Which was really inspiring to me as a person.

 (Casey)

My favourite speaker was Riley Hathaway because she had talked about how she made a show with her Dad about sea life. She loved the ocean so much and tried to swim every day after school. She overcame many of her fears but was also overwhelmed by all the rubbish in the ocean. She also talked about how doing good things in life can influence others around you.

 (Kiera)

My favourite speaker was Shay Wright because he showed us that we can be our own superhero and that your voice can do many things for yourself and others. He also told us that you may or may not be able to do things on your own. A quote from him was You can achieve more as a team than as a single person.

(Takurangi)

It was a great day out!

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari He toa takitini

My strength is not due to me alone, but due to the strength of many.

Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori

Lots of fun activities were done this week - Te Whare Pono created our 'korowai' -  it has the pepeha of everyone in our whare.

Te Whare Pono's  whakatauki:

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa.

Let us keep close together, not wide apart

and some of the Room 10 girls got creative Tik Tok style:

In Reading the class learnt about the features of narrative texts when they read some classic narratives. After completing their texts they then created new book covers for these great stories:

STARS TEINA

'Stars Teina is a programme deigned to help students make a successful transition into Intermediate and High School. It works to strengthen the sense of community within the school.

The weekly classroom programmes encourage a positive attitudes in both social and academic situations.

It builds student confidence and life-skills that can be transferrred to both the school and community ."

Room 10 enjoy going to Stars Teina (especially when Koni - a former Room 10 herself) is facilitating, they especially enjoy the team building games:

Sign Language
This year we were luck enough to have our Food Tech Teacher Miss Livingstone (aka Chef) attached to our Whare.
She is proficient at Sign Language so we decided to introduce the classes to NZSL - New Zealand Sign Language where they learnt the basics.
Room 10's enjoyed it and when the opportunity came to go to the next level - which involved taking part in an online course several class members joined up. Their progress can be seen below:

Thanks to Chef (Miss Livingstone) the children in our Whare also learnt to sign to our National Anthem and the 660 Song Pepeha:
