On Wednesday 8 June Room 10 went over to the Te Awamutu Museum to find  out about a significant celebration in New Zealand - MATARIKI.
Alan the Museum's Education Officer  taught us how to make traditional manu tukutuku  (kites) - thats Alan in the post below!
We used raupo, toetoe and harakeke to make them, they are now all hanging up in our classroom. One windy day we'll try flying some of them.
After lunch in the Memorial Park( and a game of bullrush!) we then learnt about traditional ways of gathering food and had a puzzle in the Museum to solve.

Creative Information Reports and Our Special Reading Tutor

 Tokoroa Intermediate is lucky enough to have members of our community who volunteer to come into school once a week to help children with their reading. Room 10 has Mr Blair and .... Di.
Di or Mrs Bell as she is sometimes known, keeps us entertained- she goes to Zumba and each week she shares some of her moves with us.
We are very grateful to Mr Blair and Di for giving up their time to help some of Room 10 with their reading.

On Fridays some of us have been writing creative  information reports on a creature we ' discovered'  on our Survival Islands. We published these using pwer point.

Congratulations Michael Chopra

Michael entered a Country Music competition in Matamata last weekend- he played Ten Guitars in the final and won the Entertainer of the Year - Junior Male Solo Award.

Today in Assembly Michael played Ten Guitars for the school- Room 10 are very proud of him, thanks too to Josie for being his personal assistant!

Today we also had the Pukekohe High School Band come to school,  they  called in on their way to a competition in the Manawatu. They played 9 pieces of music to us...

Term 2: Anzac Soldiers Lunch

On Monday Room 10 had rations for lunch, the same food the Anzac soldiers had at Gallipoli. In the rations pack we had bully beef, cheese, jam, and hard army biscuits.

"I feel sorry for the Anzac Soldiers their food was disguisting" Logan said.

"The Biscuits were hard as rock and the bully beef looked and smelt like cat food!" commented Nicole, I didn't enjoy the lunch and felt sorry for the soliders that had to eat it.

Both of them agreed the only thing they liked were the jam and cheese.  

I personally do not like the look of this lunch.

Parent Interviews and Farewell to Whaea Amy.

Haere rā, me hoki mai anō koe.

On Friday 13 May the school farewelled Whaea Amy Awatere our school Kuia and Kaiawhina, she has been taking Te Reo lessons  here for many years and always assisted with our Marae visits. The Kapa Haka group performed for her and the school made sure they sang Haere Mai Nga Iwi really well for her too.

Last week we also  had Parent Interviews- we came with our  parents and got our reports, then we had an interview with Mrs Puke. We discussed our progress so far and what we need to do to improve our learning.

We Will Remember Them

Room 10 are learning about the significance of ANZAC Day and why we remember the soldiers who went to war.

Nicole brought along her Grandfathers war mementos to share with the class- we got to see his medals, and listened to some of his diary extracts.
