Term 3 2022

 A lot of Term 3 work was integrated and based on Anzacs and Gallipoli - a follow-up from our EOTC in Term 2. 

In Reading, we learnt to identify and use the text features in Nonfiction texts to find information needed to complete a research inquiry on aspects of WW1. At the end of the study, we learnt to create an index  for the booklets created

Digital maps were created to show alliances in WW1, and in Writing Gallipoli 'soldiers' were created - always a key part of Room 10 Anzac studies,  to do this we looked at what life was like in NZ in 1914-15 - occupations, names, transport, etc.  An emphasis was put on adding descriptive detail to make the soldiers created as realistic as possible, and using paragraphs correctly. 

The 'soldiers' created then wrote a Diary entry from the perspective of a soldier at Gallipoli, to show an understanding of what life there was like:  

At the end of the term, the class took part in a 'getting to know you'  exchange with our epals in Tahiti and a class in Kentucky, USA. 

As it was Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori, we added Maori kupu to our charts ...

The class attend weekly lessons at Stars Teina - a programme run by the Graeme Dingle Foundation:

Stars Teina is a year 7 and 8 programme specifically created for intermediate schools. It is designed to help students make a successful transition into intermediate and secondary school. It uses an inquiry-based learning approach to explore the programme themes. Stars Teina strengthens the sense of community within a school and brings younger and older students together with a ‘buddy system’. The programme develops positive relationships by encouraging older students to role model positive behaviour. Stars Teina also builds student confidence and life-skills that can be transferred to their school and community.

In Term 3,  two of our Room 10 boys had the opportunity to go to Hamilton to see the All Blacks train. they were lucky enough to meet some of the players.

Term 2 2022

Term 2 was a busy one and Covid continued to pop up from time to time ...

We wrote Remember poems and memoirs, learned about Matariki, finished Survival Island, wrote and presented speeches, and trained for and took part in the school Cross Country. 

Some of the class took part in the Epro8 challenges and we went to the National Army Museum at Waiouru.

The EPro8 Challenge is a science and engineering competition. Students participate in a series of events firstly within their school and then inter-school.                                        Room 10 had 2 teams in the interschool competition, and our boy's team was selected to take part in the interschool competition in Taupo.

We also wrote Memoirs:

Survival Island 2022 was challenging, thanks to Covid and winter ills. This year we tried a more digital format and added in some animal research to link in with the texts read aloud in class that were about boys' survival after being washed off a yacht (Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpugo and a plane crash in Hatchet by Gary Paulsen).

While not all activities were completed by some groups - it achieved its purpose - randomly selected groups learning to work collaboratively together.

It's been a Room 10 tradition for many, many years to learn about the events at Gallipoli - the reason we remember on Anzac Day - 25th April each year, and to go to the National Army Museum at Waiouru to further understanding of these events and the significance of Gallipoli. 

2020 and 2021 Room 10's were unable to go to the Museum because of Covid restrictions, so it was good to be able to finally return this year.

The class had a tour of the museum, took part in a Medic's programme - where they learned what it was like to be a medic on a WW1 battlefield, learned about the Maori Battalion and took part in a 'find the answer' game in the museum. 

And as usual - playing on the tank at lunchtime was still the highlight! 

     

Speeches were written - they could be informative, entertaining, or persuasive. They were practiced - use of expression, volume, clarity, and then delivered to the class. 

Our three best went through to our Whare Pono finals and from there two from each year level were selected for the school final.

Room 10 were extremely proud of:

Abigail for winning the Persuasive category for her speech on 'Being Successful' where she spoke about the number of successful athletes who have been pupils of Tokoroa Intermediate. 

Payton -  won the overall Year 7 Best Speech, for his informative speech on Matariki.

and Cerrone won the overall Year 8 Best Speech, for his informative speech on Moon Knight. 

         Reminding me that if he won I said he'd get McDonalds!

Matariki became a national holiday this year, Room 10 learned about each of the stars - their names and the important role each has,  played rippa Tapu Ae, and listened to Witi Ihimaera's book The Astromancer.

Lots of knowledge was shared by our expert on Matariki - Payton, who kindly baked us Matariki biscuits.

The school Cross Country was held in Week 10 at the Sportsground. The first 10 in each section of the Elite race will now run for the school at the WIMS Cross Country.

Maria 3rd, Abigail 5th Junior Girls, Preston 8th Junior Boys.

Thanks to all Te Whare Pono's who took part, when the points were added up we won the overall 1st Place 

   

Class Councillor Speeches 2022 and Te Tiriti o Waitangi

 Our speeches this year were of a high standard but these two boys produced  videos and  it was no surprise  that they were voted to be our class councillors for 2022

Term 1 2022

 Another Covid year and the Year 8's started school first - masks were mandatory:

Year 7's arrived and both groups  created infographic posters (Y7 using Canva) and slides (Y8) to help the class to get to know each other :

New Year 8's,  and Year 7's created their pepeha to join the existing Year 8 ones in the class - these are always displayed in Room 10.

Te Whare Pono learned new waiata and  practised the ones learned last year:

In Science (with lots of Covid interuptions - we averaged 12-15 in class for a couple of weeks)  we learnt about the importance of Hydration
