Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori - Whakatauki

This year for Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori, we had a rotation around the different classes in our Team. and tried a variety of different activities - dramatising a Maori myth, kowhaiwhai colouring, harakeke weaving and string games.

Brooke our Teacher Aide - an 'old Room 10, she features in some of the first ever Room 10 blog posts. 

In Room 10, the school whakatauki were looked at, and posters were created to show these, and their relevance to Tokoroa Intermediate:

 

Microscopic Beasts - why keeping hands clean is important.

Once we got back to school after Lockdown (and again when we recently returned to Level 2), hand washing and sanitising became very important and a regular part of our classroom routines. 

A very cool activity was found online that showed why it is important to do this. two groups were tasked with reading instructions and setting up the experiments. 

The plastic bags with the bread in for each experiment were stapled up on the class wall where the arrival of microorganisms could be easily seen: 

Get New Zealand Writing - a great School Kit project

Room 10 does the Get New Zealand Writing project at the start of the year, it is supplied by a company in Hamilton that links classes all over the country. Stationery to complete the charts are provided by Warehouse Stationery,and the courier bags are supplied and collected.

Not only all that but each year the project introduces new forms of poetry and writing experiences - a truly worthwhile project to take part in. 

Although this was done during and after Lockdown, way back in April - May, it shows more of the work done by the class.

Terms 1 and 2 in Room 10 2020

2020 has been quite a year so far, it seemed school had just started when Covid 19 arrived in New Zealand. 

Lockdown and online learning, returning to school in Level 2 and a new look class as our school changed to composite classes. For Room 10 that saw us lose some students and 12 'old Room 10's' return.

So what have we been doing? 

Prior to Lockdown - some Favourite Place writing and as it was summer a look at the importance of being hydrated. We had started our Get New Zealand Writing project and wrote some great poems (Thanks School Kit for some more wonderful ideas)

Finally back at school, reflecting on Lockdown experiences, posters and poems created, getting to know each other in our new look class. Creating Anzac soldiers for the Year 7's and writing information reports on pandemics for the Year 8's.

Tuia 250 - As They Saw It.

To end 2019, the class took part in an investigative project supplied by School Kit. Some great learning about the events that took place  250 years ago - especially the role Tupaia the Tahitian navigator played.
