Get New Zealand Writing - a great School Kit project

Room 10 does the Get New Zealand Writing project at the start of the year, it is supplied by a company in Hamilton that links classes all over the country. Stationery to complete the charts are provided by Warehouse Stationery, and the courier bags are supplied and collected.
Not only all that but each year the project introduces new forms of poetry and writing experiences - a truly worthwhile project to take part in.
Although this was done during and after Lockdown, way back in April - May, it shows more of the work done by the class.
Thanks School Kit we look forward to seeing what the 2021 version
will involve and who we will get paired with ...

Terms 1 and 2 in Room 10 2020

2020 has been quite a year so far, it seemed school had just started when Covid 19 arrived in New Zealand.
Lockdown and online learning, returning to school in Level 2 and a new look class as our school changed to composite classes. For Room 10 that saw us lose some students and 12 'old Room 10's' return.
So what have we been doing?

Prior to Lockdown - some Favourite Place writing and as it was summer a look at the importance of being hydrated. We had started our Get New Zealand Writing project and wrote some great poems (Thanks School Kit for some more wonderful ideas)
We also looked at our school whakatauki and what they meant to us:

During Lockdown - the challenge of online learning.

Finally back at school, reflecting on Lockdown experiences, posters and poems created, getting to know each other in our new look class. Creating Anzac soldiers for the Year 7's and writing information reports on pandemics for the Year 8's.

Dads Worksheets

I was contacted by Jennifer at DadsWorksheets two years ago when she asked me to share a link on this blog to the great Maths resources they have on their site. I use these a lot and they are perfect for printing off at home for use too.

Now they have created a word search site too:

Tuia 250 - As They Saw It.

To end 2019, the class took part in an investigative project supplied by School Kit. Some great learning about the events that took place  250 years ago - especially the role Tupaia the Tahitian navigator played.

Marae time again

The highlight of our year in Room 10 is when the class go to our local Marae - Papa O Te Aroha in Term 4.
This year we went for three nights, the class took part in a powhiri, learned the stories behind many of the carvings, helped prepare and eat a hangi, wove harakeke fish and bracelets with Whaea Lizzy, and learned tititorea games with Whaea Awhina.

They played Ki O Rahi with Eugene the sports promoter from Raukawa, painted a fence to give something back to the Marae and complete a Student Volunteer Army Challenge for School Kit NZ, took part in Room Ten's Got Talent, had a swim at the local pools, leaned to play Moonball and spent Halloween watching Maleficent 2 at the Tokoroa Cinema.

Day One the class travelled over to Te Awamutu to the Space Centre where they learned a lot from Space Dave and went to the Te Awamutu Museum to find out about the early navigators who discovered New Zealand.

Some of the stories behind the carvings in Papa O Te Aroha:

Day Two saw the side fence and seats painted, luckily the weather was good. This was followed by a swim at the pools, hangi for dinner and Room Ten's Got Talent...

Science Investigations - Candles

In Science, the class learned about aspects of the Material World, the three states of matter, observed candles burning and learned that in order for combustion to take place there needs to be fuel, heat and oxygen present.
They then carried out investigations involving candles:
